Nontoxic Antifouling Paint

Reference number
Coordinator Ekomarine Paint AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 090 000
Project duration April 2013 - March 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim and objective with the project was to create an environmentally friendly Antifouling paint with an effect equivalent to the biocidal and heavy metal-based products that are currently dominating the market - and that since 2012 also dominate the Baltic Sea market! The goal for 2014 was to market a product suitable for the entire leisureboat fleet in the Baltic Sea. Even though the new formulations functions as intended - the Board of directors has decided that it is too risky too to execute this launge. Additional tests has to be done on boats in motion which includes friction.

Results and expected effects

According to results achieved during the project period the expected impact of the project to the company´s product Neptun Formula was to increase the market potential from slow-moving boats in the Baltic Sea to all recreational boats in the Baltic Sea and on the Swedish west coast. However, the company´s board of directors claimes that the risks are too big for launching the new product this to season 2014 on the new markets. The company will need one moore season with wide testing before the new product can reach out to theese new markets.

Approach and implementation

The companys arrangements for research, development, monitoring and analysis has been largely implemented without major deviations. External factors such as the unusually late completion of the boating season in 2013 affected the time schedule as we could not get started with analysis and follow-up of this summer´s boat tests in time. This delayed our tests in warmer waters during the winter months.
