New innovation that enables hip protection for elders without compromising comfort or aesthetic design.

Purpose and goal

Falls are a major issue, especially in Sweden where around 17,500 people suffer a hip fracture each year. Despite the severity, current protective solutions are rarely used due to uncomfortable designs. OICAN has developed a protective technology with high shock absorption and environmentally friendly properties, used in the patented innovation SAFE HAT.OICAN is now developing a comfortable and stylish hip protector aimed at increasing use and reducing the risk of serious injuries.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to result in a completed prototype of a hip protector based on OICAN’s protective technology. The prototype will be verified through technical drop tests and biomechanical simulations to ensure high shock absorption, comfort, and user-friendliness. In the long term, the solution is expected to increase the use of hip protection among the elderly, thereby reducing the number of hip fractures and consequently lowering healthcare costs, disability, and suffering.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out in four work packages: 1. Project Management: Ensure structure, monitoring, and communication. 2. Development: Design and creation of the hip protector prototype through CAD, biomechanical analyses, and testing. 3. Injection Molding: Develop the mold insert and produce prototypes in the correct material. 4. Verification: Independent testing at RISE to confirm functionality, durability, and safety.
