Purpose and goal

In the project we aim to improve positioning capabilities of autonomous vehicles by introducing a new sensing technology based on passive observations of "signals-of-opportunity". This is expected to increase the robustness of autonomous drive systems in the conditions where better performance is most needed, such as in dense cities or in bad weather. The project aims to deliver a vehicle-integrated demonstrator showing the potential for this technology using several different methods for performing the positioning, with associated scientific journal publications.

Expected results and effects

Deliver a positioning system that operates independently of the existing suite of AD sensors such as LIDAR/RADAR, inertial measurements units, and GNSS. The project will advance the state-of-the-art for this scientific field, and help to establish the potential and limitations of the underlying technology for the application of vehicular positioning. As a tangential benefit, it will improve the standing of Swedish industry and universities in the fields of positioning, vehicular channel modeling, deep learning and system integration for autonomous vehicles.

Planned approach and implementation

Volvo Cars is the project leader, and has employed an industrial PhD student enrolled at Lund University to develop the underlying technology. TerraNet has also employed an industrial PhD student enrolled in the same department at Lund University. AB Volvo will contribute primarily in the implementation phases. The project is split up into technology development, integration and demonstration work packages in sequence.
