Measuring the latency of dynamic pressure sensors

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - RISE Mätteknik, Borås
Funding from Vinnova SEK 430 000
Project duration December 2020 - March 2022
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The main goal of the project is to establish a method for measuring the latency of dynamic pressure sensors. By measuring the latency of the dynamic pressure sensors, complete and accurate characterization of the sensors in the time domain is available. The shock tube was equipped by an optical probe. The method for latency measurement was established. The latency of different dynamic pressure sensors was calculated. The uncertainty budget was estimated. The results were published in Metrologia Journal, Eynas Amer et al 2022 Metrologia 59 035001.

Expected long term effects

The method proposed in this project will increase the temporal accuracy of the measured dynamic response of the pressure sensors. A well-characterized pressure sensor will provide more accurate dynamic pressure measurements for example in the combustion engines. That in turn will lead to a better control of the combustion process and subsequently higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Approach and implementation

The project was performed on the existing shock tube at the National Laboratory for pressure. The project consisted of the following activities: Design and production of the new fixture with an optical access. Purchase the essential equipment for the optical setup. Updating the software for data acquisition and formulating the uncertainty budget. Performing the experiments. Results analysis and writing a publication. Publishing the results. The project followed the time plan very well.
