Purpose and goal
LLMs4EU aims to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty and linguistic diversity by developing open language models, datasets, and tools for all EU languages. The project will provide businesses, public organizations, and researchers with access to competitive AI resources while ensuring compliance with European values, the AI Act, GDPR, and related regulations.
Expected effects and result
The project is expected to deliver open language models, datasets, and supporting tools covering all EU languages. The outcomes will improve the ability of European companies and organizations to develop AI-based services, enhance access to information across languages, and contribute to greater competitiveness, innovation, and democratic participation throughout Europe.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is carried out by a broad European consortium led by ALT-EDIC and involving organizations from more than 20 countries. Activities include language model development, dataset creation and acquisition, tool development, regulatory compliance, and validation through sector-specific use cases to ensure practical impact, scalability, and broad adoption.
