Important results from the project

The project has enabled that iron ore transports by heavy trucks between the pit in Kaunisvaara and the train-loading station in Svaapavaara can be monitored and reviewed to make sure they comply with the 90 tonnes exemption for road transports. The project has made use of already existing ITS infrastructure and added specific components to achieve the targets. Due to financial uncertainties regarding the mining company the project has been prolonged and some changes has been made to the project goals.

Expected long term effects

The project has shown that it is possible to use existing hardware and IT infrastructure to create a base for an ITS platform. One of the project goals, optimising vehicle speed in order to avoid oncoming traffic on bridges, has only been achieved in part due to the uncertainties regarding the mining company. The system that has been delivered by the project is in use every day by the transporter and the continued development is financed by the transporter.

Approach and implementation

The project was divided into four different workpackages. 1.Analysis and architecture. Choosing communication technology as well as interfaces. 2.Adjustment to existing software to support vehicle follow-up and management of deviations. 3.Control of bridge signals 4.Introduce driver support for signalling of existing time slot to vehicles on road. All workpages delivered according to plan except for WP3 due to the mining company. The platform that has been developed is built on standardised components and methods and may be reused in other ITS projects.
