Project duration November 2012 - September 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal of this project was to investigate what drives or hinder sustainability in general and eco-design, in particular in Swedish companies and their product development. The study will also point out the need for future research that could strengthen this area. The goal that this study shall provide the basis for future science-based research and initiatives to strengthen company´s ability to sustainable innovation, has been achieved, since the study could identify what research and what investments would be needed in the field.

Results and expected effects

The study shows that sustainability issues are becoming more important for Swedish industry and that top management sometimes are pushing sustainability. Most companies focus single issues rather than having a holistic view, and many are hindered by lack of skills, attitudes, routines and a common language. Research and initiatives that lead to models and methods for long-term strategic sustainability initiatives in companies product and process development, would lead to higher competitiveness, both in short term and in a future where sustainability become more important.

Approach and implementation

The work includes both a literature review and a study of Swedish companies and was done in the form of a pilot study of 20 companies, a web survey, where 108 responses were received and by 21 depth interviews. The results have been presented to, discussed with, and processed by both Swedish and international representatives from academia and industry who have shown great interest in this study. The implementation has been successful, and the budget as well as timetable has been held and the desired result is obtained.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
