Purpose and goal

Building on ongoing project and SAFER HBM developments, this project will develop validated methods and modelling tools to assess shoulder injury risk in bicycle falls. The model will be enhanced and validated using new PMHS impact tests. A population-representative shoulder model will be developed, while volunteer studies will provide kinematic data for realistic crash simulations. Test protocols for cyclist shoulder protective equipment, supporting product developments, will be delivered.

Expected effects and result

Will strengthen the scientific basis for HBM-based assessment of cyclist shoulder injury risks. An enhanced shoulder model integrated into SAFER HBM will enable efficient evaluation of injury risk, protective systems, and infrastructure designs. The results supports virtual and physical test methods for cyclist protection equipment, provide evidence-based recommendations for safer infrastructure, and contribute to reduced injury severity, increased cycling, and improved sustainability.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is planned as a research and development project with a duration of two years, where the last half year is at a reduced speed, but necessary in order to take full advantage of the updated SAFER HBM, for the use of the new evaluation method of shoulder protection equipment intended to reduce the risk of shoulder injuries in bicycle single falls. The scheduling is structured to reflect the dependencies between the various work packages.
