Important results from the project
The goal of the project was to enable efficient and reliable verification of automotive radars and radar-based systems, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD) systems that rely on these sensors. To achieve these goals, we developed measurement methods for radar targets, surrogate targets with realistic radar response, and a radar simulation tool for virtual testing of radar systems. Moreover, work within international standardization (ISO) was supported in enabling future verification methods of radar signatures of soft targets.
Expected long term effects
The project resulted in new and improved methods for automotive Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurements for both real and soft targets. This, in combination with new radar-realistic (high fidelity) soft targets, will extend the testing possibilities at AstaZero and thereby the support to the Swedish automotive industry in enabling holistic testing of ADAS and AD vehicles. In parallel, a radar simulation tool to be used for virtual testing of radar systems was further developed with realistic radar models. The latter is crucial for early evaluation of ADAS and AD systems.
Approach and implementation
Project management structure was composed of a steering committee, a project manager and work package leaders. The project had bi-weekly follow-up meetings, and quarterly meetings with formal status reporting plus technical discussions to enhance the cross-coupling of competence between the partners. The steering committee consisted of one representative from each project partner and had responsibility to ensure that the project reached its goals on time and with the right quality.
