Important results from the project
Training for minimally invasive procedures is crucial for the successful treatment of patients. Colorectal resections are among the most performed procedures worldwide - the goal of this project is to create a module to meet the market’s need for a comprehensive, dynamic virtual reality product to allow laparoscopic surgeons to hone their skills in a safe, rigorous and progressive environment before operating on humans. Our vision is that every patient undergoing a medical procedure is certain that the care giver is trained and objectively certified in a simulated environment.
Expected long term effects
The development of the module will provide the project partners the opportunity to take market leadership in simulated laparoscopic training of the hemicolectomy procedure. The long-term goal is to save more lives through safer operators and more efficient care. This will benefit society by raising the level of competence of new surgeons, as well as gaining access to laparoscopic procedures.
Approach and implementation
Creating the module for right-sided hemicolectomy has required the development of new software, which has been preceded by intensive research. We have agile taken on parallel work packages, with a focus on R&D to lay the foundation for a platform and architecture that can handle the technical challenges the development of the module entails. Through close collaboration with medical advisors, we have identified critical steps in procedure and developed an accurate anatomical model to ensure quality and usability.
