Gas permeability improvement for Type IV and III pressure vessels

Reference number
Coordinator Graphmatech AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 750 000
Project duration November 2021 - December 2023
Status Completed
Venture Competence centre

Purpose and goal

In this project, the effect of graphene within a polymer matrix has been investigated, focusing on improving gas permeability properties. This part of the project aimed to generate formulations and modify processes to decrease permeability of hydrogen and optimize mechanical properties. Testing has taken place at material level, not a complete hydrogen storage tank.

Expected results and effects

This project has verified the technical feasibility of HDPE -graphene composites and PA-graphene composites for type IV pressure vessel liners up to TRL5. Graphmatechs HDPE and PA masterbatches brings hydrogen permeation down to a completely new level. The project has added knowledge within the process and formulation of polymer composites for hydrogen storage an transport and has generated 5 filed patent applications and valuable data.

Planned approach and implementation

In a first step, literature was evaluated. A DOE for the initial trials and selection of test institutes was made. For HDPE, two formulations were developed for extrusion and injection molding; for PA, two formulations are being developed. Gas permeability against reference has been tested. Scale-up of material production has taken place. Materials for pressure vessel prototypes have been produced. Pressure vessel prototypes have been manufactured. Permeation and mechanical properties have been tested for 2 products. Project reports have been written.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
