Purpose and goal

We have developed an app with norm-critical design as a dialogue support in antenatal care between midwives and Arabic-speaking women. The app is a complement to interpreters. The app is quality assured and informs Arabic speakers about pregnancy, birth and parenting. Via the app, midwives can check that the women have received correct information. The norm critique concerns equality between women of different ethnicity and has double reflexivity.

Expected results and effects

We have developed the app SADIMA with norm-critical design as a dialogue support in antenatal care (ANC).The app will be used by midwives in contact with Arabic-speaking women and inform about ANC and the care they will receive. The app gives women knowledge, which increases their empowerment. We have increased our understanding of the opportunities and risks that exist in communication where the parties do not understand each other and how communication can be promoted through an app. Also, the midwives can be sure that the women have been given the correct information.

Planned approach and implementation

The work in the project has been done in 4 steps. We have mapped-out the needs of women and midwives and developed an app with content in Arabic and Swedish. The app has text, pictures and speech. The app has been tested and evaluated in antenatal care in practice. Then we altered the structure and upgraded the app, which significantly increased the functionality. The app is called SADIMA, and it is free to download from the App Store. The material from the project has been analysed using linguistic and health science norm-critical methods, and we have had workshops about norm-critical design.
