Purpose and goal

The goal of this project is to develop universal lightweight and flexible 3D active shutter glasses for 3D applications at home (TV, Console Gaming, Pay per View) and as well as theaters. The main task for LC-Tec in the project was to identify a setup of materials and to develop a manufacturing process for plastic optical shutters where the existing equipment for LCD-manufacturing could be used. LC-Tec should also during the project manufacture several optical shutter prototypes to be used for evaluation and development of the final product.

Results and expected effects

LC-Tec has developed a fully functional manufacturing process for optical shutter for 3D-glasses, and have now a base for creating a small or medium volume manufacturing capacity in future. Furthermore, with this project LC-Tec has created a possibility for manufacturing of other products with same technology. The product portfolio has been extended with prototypes of flexible optical LC-shutters made of plastic. LC-Tec has from this new business area already several new customers that are interested in LC-shutters made of plastic.

Approach and implementation

The project has been performed with a close and fruitful cooperation between the project partner companies ( Volfoni and MUT) LC-Tec has in the project systematically performed tests with several different new materials to find the best materials for the product. Parallel a new manufacturing process has been developed and manufacturing equipment has been modified. Several manufacturing series have been performed and from these we have been able to get fully functional prototypes that have been used of the project partner companies for development of electronics, LC and design.
