Purpose and goal
The project set out to answer a few concrete questions like “How to optical networks age” and “How do we transform network maintenance into a data-driven industry”. These have largely been answered with new knowledge and innovation in following areas: 1.Best practices of maintaining and operating fibre-optical and in-home networks. 2.More knowledge on the OPEX of fibre-optical and in-home networks, to serve as decision material for new networks. 3.Best practices for deployment of fibre-optical network, including trenching, micro-trenching and the hanging of fibre.
Expected results and effects
H-OPTO as a competence network and an innovation platform was able to meet the original goals of the partners and bring them closer to their long-term goals. Knowledge shared and created during H-OPTO significantly the expertise for many partners and a number of unforeseen results were achieved, especially when optics and wireless expertise were combined. The project had notable commercial impact for a number of partners, allowed partners to improve their market positioning but also created new knowledge, networks and confidence. In short, the quality of the results was very high.
Planned approach and implementation
Each partner entered the project with clear plans of what to achieve and questions to answer. A high level of trust was early established allowing a generosity in sharing knowledge, experiences and data, and support for each other’s goals. The efficiency of the group became very high. As H-OPTO progressed new topics became priorities and some tasks lost relevance. The work was kept close to the partners’ challenges and competitiveness. A few of the partners are active in standardisation and have brought results to both the optics and wireless standardisation communities.
