Important results from the project
The objective of the project was to validate the developed installation method for elements in composite parts. To raise the level from TRL 4 to TRL 6 and to achieve a more robust and reliable solution before the method is used for serial and large-scale production. The project chose a wider approach with greater variation in the installed elements with respect to its shape, material and function. The wish was to develop the installation method in a customer tool, but for many reasons this could not be realized, instead the test tool was used according to the project plan.
Expected long term effects
The project took a wider approach with greater variation in the installed elements. For example, a plastic ball joint was installed with a maintained function, in a composite part, which indicates a low leakage and enough high tightness. Despite the mass being reduced to 20% of the existing solution, a sufficiently high strength was obtained. From a corrosion point of view is the installation method preferred according to Volvos Accelerated Corrosion Testing, VCS 1027,1449 ACT II. An invention application has been granted and eventually will a patent application be submitted.
Approach and implementation
The project tried to follow the plan but due to the epidemic the project was delayed and had to be prolonged. Several companies we have been in contact with have changed their priority where research and development has been downgraded. As an effect of this the project chose a wider approach with greater variation in the installed elements regarding its function, shape and material. We have thus installed elements with maintained function that we did not think was possible.
