Project duration November 2020 - November 2023
Status Completed

Important results from the project

ELiMINATE aims to develop an implementation framework to advise on the best way forward in terms of establishing a local end-of-life LIB treatment facility and recycling industry. With the consolidated framework and other deliverables, the aim of this novel approach was reached. Although many results of the analysis are time-dependent (ie they have an expiration date), the approach itself is reproducible.

Expected long term effects

The results give an insight into different hydrometallurgical technologies perform based on different criteria, which can be summarized as being mainly economically and environmentally. The combination of different approaches is transparent in the reports and are expected to increase the awareness and courage in research and industry to implement them. This is done in an effort for the LIB recycling industry to make better and more efficient choices in technology selection, facility location placement, and more.

Approach and implementation

- A market analysis to understand the nuances of LIBs in the European region. - An LCA to understand the potential environmental impacts of implementing the technology in a plant. - A technoeconomic assessment to calculate the potential revenue of establishing plants using the different technologies in different European countries. - A mapping and reverse logistics optimization to understand the collection and transport dynamics and location dependency on the monetary and sustainability of the technologies evaluated. - A business model development to integrate the findings.
