Purpose and goal

The project aims to develop an ultra-light, integrated de-icing solution for unmanned aerial vehicles, enabling flights even in arctic conditions. Through graphene-based composite technology, the heating function is integrated directly into the UAV structure with less than 1% weight gain. The goal is to replace heavy and complex systems with G-ICE – a multifunctional composite material that ensures the efficiency and performance of UAVs even in severe icing conditions.

Expected effects and result

The project enables year-round operational UAVs in cold and icy environments, which strengthens Sweden´s defense capability, Arctic preparedness and cooperation within NATO. Through Swedish-developed graphene composite, a lightweight, energy-efficient de-icing solution is created that increases the range, reliability and safety of the drones. The project also strengthens domestic industry, technological sovereignty and contributes to sustainable, inclusive defense innovation.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is being implemented by Grafren AB and LiU. Grafren leads the project, is responsible for material synthesis, coating, and 2D/3D composite prototypes. LiU is responsible for material selection, design, and mechanical testing. The project will run for 12 months (Nov 2025–Oct 2026) in five work packages: project management, design, integration of heating function, 3D manufacturing, and final tests in climate chamber and icing wind tunnel.
