Purpose and goal

ElRöj aims to enable the large-scale deployment of battery-powered clearing saws by developing and validating business models, new decision-support tools, and implementation frameworks for economically, environmentally and socially sustainable forestry. The project will identify and address operational and business-related barriers to electrification while creating the conditions for broader adoption through clearer allocation of responsibilities, efficient planning and robust field operations.

Expected effects and result

The project will deliver a validated framework for professional battery-powered pre-commercial thinning, including decision-support and implementation tools showing when the battery system is suitable, how operations should be organized, and what commitments are required from stakeholders. Expected impacts include faster electrification, improved working conditions, reduced fossil fuel dependence, enhanced resilience, increased competitiveness for Swedish companies and more sustainable forestry.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is organized in four work packages. It starts with identification of use cases, needs, requirements, and barriers. Next step is field studies on productivity, working conditions, energy consumption and battery logistics, as well as the development of operational and strategic decision-support tools. Finally, business models and implementation frameworks are developed, tested and validated in close-to-real-world settings together with forest owners, contractors and system suppliers.
