Purpose and goal
The SWARMs project has been a wide spanning project in which the focus has been to make swarms of autonomous and remote operated underwater vehicles cooperate to solve a number of predefined use cases. Our role in the project has been to supply the vehicles with sonar sensors. We have also assisted the other project members with data sets of sonar data for developing and testing new algorithms. Our main focus in the project has been to develop a Forward Looking Sonar prototype for use on small vehicles. This work has included both hardware, firmware and software for the device as well as testing.
Expected results and effects
The SWARMs project has been a success and resulted in many new ideas and products (http://www.swarms.eu/). Our part of the project has resulted in a very promising prototype of a Forward Looking Sonar that is designed to suit small remote operated or autonomous vehicles. We have also adapted our communications interface to better suit the interfaces currently most commonly occuring in ROVs and AUVs today. We are very content with our results during the project and after some more development we hope to add the Forward Looking Sonar to our product catalogue.
Planned approach and implementation
The project has been devided into work packages (WP) which in turn were devided into several different tasks. Each task has had a project partner in charge who reported to the partner who was in charge of the WP the task belonged to. The work effort of each task has been carried out differently depending on the nature of the task in question. The project has run smoothly, considering the size of the project and the geographical distance between the project partners. It has run over a three year period with 6 months reporting periods and larger tests, demonstrations and reports annually..
