Important results from the project

The EcoComp Project works on developping a system for credit exchange for biodiversity that can be used for Biodiversity off-sets and for Nature-based climate solutions. The overall goal is to achieve Net Gain for biodiversity and GHG. In phase 1 (Steg 1) companies specialized in biodiversity, climate compensation, nature-based carbon storage, natural capital assets and scientists have developed a prototype ready for Phase 2 (Steg 2). The fundamental parts are BBOP:s principles for Biodiversity Offsets and The system for the Voluntary Climate Compensation Market.

Expected long term effects

Phase 1 (Steg 1) has shown that there is a need for a focal point for buyers and sellers of biodiversity credits in order for compensation to take place. There are several existing stakeholders that can assist but buyers and sellers needs a stakeholder with the main specialization biodiversity, biodiversity and carbon off-sets. This stakeholder will be part of the value chain that is needed for off-sets to take place. Off-sets is expected to be at least 50000 ha/ year when the system is introduced in the market. The scale depends on a new unit for biodiversity, Natural Value Ekvivalent.

Approach and implementation

The project has pursued the work packages as described in the application. Most of the time have been allocated to review of the international and national arena, development of prototype and networking. The reference group have supported in the early part of the project as a bridge to the networking phase that began in May 2020. The networking has been used to gather information on on-going initiatives, trends and evaluate the market. The early research to build a foundation of knowledge was a key to create trust among potential buyers, sellers, the scientific community and others.
