Purpose and goal
To develop and test the world’s first commercial D-band (110-170GHz) beam-steering radio system designed for enabling high-capacity, low-latency, wireless joint communications and sensing (JCAS) in 6G. The proposed system will be end-to-end, including frontend (radiofrequency hardware components), backend (baseband signal processing), an electronically steered 2D-beam antenna for precise dynamic control over the direction of transmitted and received signals, and O-RAN compatibility.
Expected effects and result
The goal of EU-band is to develop and test a novel commercial D-band (110-170 GHz) radio system with electronically controlled 2D beam-steering antenna array for supporting integrated joint communications and sensing (JCAS) in 6G. This project will unlock a new generation of radio hardware for use in 6G networks that delivers high-speed, mobile and secure communications.
Planned approach and implementation
1. Develop 2D beamforming for dynamic tracking, beam splitting, capacity optimization at 140-150 GHz D-band, <25w power 2. build digital backend with terasi modules: 2 ghz bandwidth 10 gbps channel scalable to 40 gbps in four rf channels 3. implement o-ran compatible baseband for 5g 6g per imt-2030 directives and etsi thz recommendations 4. validate over-the-air signals at 2-10m indoor outdoor advancing system from trl 4 to trl 6>25w>
