Purpose and goal
The purpose of this project, a cooperation between Mentice and Laerdal Medical, was to develop the world´s first integrated emergency patient and endovascular procedure simulator. Mentice is a world leading supplier of Endovascular Simulation, and Laerdal Medical is a world leading supplier of Patient Simulators. The combination of the two companies´ technologies has created a new product: the Simman Vascular. Customized HW and SW was developed to adapt the Mentice simulator system to combine with the existing Simman 3G. Laerdal have now launched a new product - the Simman Vascular.
Expected results and effects
The goal of the project was to promote a paradigm shift in training of medical professionals, leading to increased value for patients, and to create a full emergency procedural offering towards Heart Attack, Trauma and Stroke. This goal has partly already been met, as Simman Vasculars are being actively used in several Hospitals, for example at the Stavanger University Hospital, where the Simman Vascular have been used to improve the treatment time for Stroke treatments significantly. The Simman Vascular is currently being introduced to a large number of hospitals around the world.
Planned approach and implementation
The work consisted of 7 separate work packages, split between Mentice and Laerdal. The work included both significant SW and HW development, including an integration of the two companies software stacks, to create new procedure simulations in three areas of acute care: Heart Infarction, Ischemic Stroke, and Trauma treaments. Customized hardware was created to adapt the Mentice simulator system to fit the restricted space requirements inside the Simman. Close cooperation between the two companies, along with continuous input from hospitals made the project successful.
