Purpose and goal
The overall goal is to increase the use of recycled consumer packaging in the production of new plastic films. A plastic film consisting of a mixture of virgin material and granules of recycled consumer packaging has been produced in previous projects and the goal of this project is to increase the amount of recycled material. One way to be able to do it is to develope the material with respect to processability. Further goals are to develop a general method for chemical analysis as well as a method of evaluating increased equipment wear due to contaminants in the recycled material.
Expected results and effects
The project will provide increased knowledge of recycled plastics and how much thermal, mechanical and chemical properties can distinguish between different batches. Creating a method for evaluating increased equipment wear due to an increased amount of inorganic contaminants, will further develop the test bed for plastic recycling lead by Swerea IVF. A general method for chemical analysis will be developed, which will lay the foundation for future standardization work. Combining these results will lead to a general increase in the use of recycled consumer plastics.
Planned approach and implementation
During the course of the project, several batches of recycled granules will be purchased to evaluate mechanical, chemical and thermal properties. For each batch, plastic film will also be produced. By developing a method of evaluating equipment wear, with relevant parameters for the film blowing process, the amount and type of contamination can be connected to the degree of wear. The project begins with method development, for chemical analysis and wear, and then transitions into result analysis. At the end of the project, the results will be communicated through relevant media.
