Important results from the project
To install the textile digesters in different parts of Brazil including Rio de Janerio, Blumenau and Sao Paulo in connection with the universities such as UFRJ, FURB and USP. (fullfilled) To study the technical and economic feasibility of the smaller digester.(fullfilled) Study the potential of producing biogas from waste streams in different cities to cooking fuel, electricity or upgrading to vehicle fuel for busses in Brazil.(Started, to be further investigated) Calculate the size of bigger reactors based on the potential of waste streams.(Started, to be further investigated)
Expected long term effects
Textile digesters were installed in different universities such as UFRJ (two 2m3), FURB (one 2m3 and one 200 L) and USP (two 2m3). The digesters in different cities were in operation with the local organic wastes generated in the cities, such as restaurant waste from universities or waste from fruit market or grass and other garden waste from university. Based on follow up studies in different universities, the feedbacks will be considered to develop the pilot or full scale textile digester. The textile based digesters has been found economically feasible due to our calculations.
Approach and implementation
The digester is made of a high-tech textile supplied from FOV Fabrics AB, Sweden The digesters were installed by collaboration with researchers from universities in Brazil and the University of Borås, Sweden. The operation of the digesters was frequently followed up and possible suggestions to improve the digester is communicated. The digesters were in operation for more than 3 months in November 2013 and it is able to produce ample biogas The installed design in the three universities showed a positive response, which can in turn continue for pilot project, thus commercializing it.
