Important results from the project
Purpose: Exploring solutions and ways to a more sustainable gig economy as an important part of a changing labor market, in Sweden and globally. The project has established a constellation which has been supplemented by a parallel development group with additional stakeholders. We have initiated a relevant knowledge base through current research and primary fact-gathering. We have explored the cooperative model and its potential to contribute to a more inclusive freelance market. We have also looked at the challenges with such a model regarding access to funding and regulations.
Expected long term effects
The project has explored how we can create a more sustainable Swedish labor market with a focus on short assignments or gigs. There is great potential with a greater proportion of freelance jobs in the labor market. The model we have looked at as a more sustainable way forward, and a potential solution to several major challenges, is the cooperative gig platform where freelancers also act as platform owners, where contractors and others build a a common solution that can satisfy more interests than merely constitute a marketplace, such as financial stability, collaboration and more.
Approach and implementation
We have invited various actors and stakeholders for dialogue with the project group, and conducted a number of interviews with clients, platform owners, researchers and others. We have followed the development through webinars and conferences and have had a lot of dialogue between the parties in the extended group. An open interface for knowledge acquisition (giglabsverige.se) generates continuous input on different perspectives of the challenges of the gig economy and we are inviting to workshops even after the end of the project to continue working on these matters.
