Purpose and goal
The purpose of the project is to investigate the use of carbon in renewable batteries and how cellulose and forest-based carbon can be prepared and determine the properties of the material. The second part is an experimental evaluation of carbon material in energy storage devices and this part is presented in this report. The forest based carbon did not give the best data for Ligna Energy batteries due to contaminations in the carbon. Ligna however identified a Black Carbon type that works very well for our batteries.
Expected results and effects
Ligna Energy has prepared Coin batteries using "Black Carbon" with lignin and an organic polymer as redox molecules in the positrode and the negatrode and water as electrolyte. The batteries have excellent properties for power handling (1-3 kW/kg), Power cycling (DOD 80%, 5000 cycles) and good enough energy density (20 Wh/kg). The Ligna Sustainable battery is a very attractive alternative for stationary applications since it is safe and enviromnentally friendly.
Planned approach and implementation
The Project was performed in two stages: 1. Literature study of different types of carbon for battery and Power capacitor applications 2. Selection of some types of carbon and experimental evaluation of these.
