Purpose and goal
COMET-CCM prepares Swedish industry for large-scale CO2 electrolysis through a 9-month knowledge-exchange mobility between Hydroyal and KTH. The goal is to combine KTH´s fundamental research on CO2 reduction with Hydroyal´s roll-to-roll manufacturing capabilities. This will establish clear design principles and a development roadmap for scalable, platinum-group-metal-free electrodes and catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) to accelerate a net-zero industry.
Expected effects and result
The project expects to map knowledge gaps and needs within Swedish CO2 electrolysis. Deliverables include a development roadmap and design rules for scalable, PGM-free electrodes and CCM components. Long-term, it establishes strong collaboration between KTH and Hydroyal. This strengthens manufacturing competence, accelerates the transition to net-zero, and secures global competitiveness in future value chains for CO2-based products.
Planned approach and implementation
COMET-CCM is structured into three work packages over nine months. WP1 focuses on baseline mapping of Swedish and global CO2 electrolysis needs and knowledge gaps. WP2 involves an immersive research mobility at KTH to test state-of-the-art CO2 cells and identify electrode design requirements. WP3 synthesizes these insights into a CCM development roadmap and disseminates results to Swedish manufacturing actors to plan follow-on projects.
