Important results from the project
This project evaliuated an industrially viable process that converts Ti swarf into low-cost powders by ball milling and consolidation by cold-spray coating and additive manufacturing. In the project we have confirmed the principal feasibility of powder production from Ti swarf. Analysis of shape and size distribution as well as flowability of the powder suggest its applicability to cold spray manufacturing. A clear challenge is the oxidation of the powder, a subject for future research.
Expected long term effects
The project built and strenthened future collaboration pathways between KTH and industry and academic partners in the European cold spray sphere as well as a Swedish end-user and manufacturer of Ti products.
Approach and implementation
The experimental work of the project was implemented at KTH while the consortium held monthly meetings for updates on results and strategy. Three master students performed the work and were directly supervised by the PI. Thus, most work packages were completed in schedule. Due to personnel changes, one work package could not be completed, and the respective funding was returned. Also, as a consequence of the personnel changes, no follow-up proposal was submitted to Vinnova.
