Purpose and goal

The aim of this project has been to investigate the conditions for a circular packaging system for medical devices. The current packaging solution and distribution of the products as well as regulatory directives have been analysed. This has resulted in a clear picture of barriers and opportunities for introducing multiple packaging in a circular system. Furthermore, the project has resulted in a proposal for how these multiple packaging should be designed to meet both regulatory requirements but also end users´ demands.

Expected results and effects

One of the expected results of the project was to develop a system solution and a plan for implementing this solution. One of the conclusions based on the analysis of the current system and the prevailing conditions is that it is necessary to look at two system solutions, one that is suitable for patients who use the products in the home and one for hospitals and other major care facilities. Since the packages need to be disinfected between uses, a package made of a plastic material, preferably bio-based, could be used.

Planned approach and implementation

The barriers and opportunities regarding an implementation of multiple packaging has been mapped by interviewing relevant actors, both along the current value chain and outside the same, and by analysing current directives and legislation within the area. Furthermore, a trend and market analysis has been made to list solutions in other industries. Based on this mapping, a proposal has been developed comprising both new types of packaging and a system for circulating these while meeting regulatory requirements and other demands.
