Bone Mineral Density Analysis System (BDAS)

Reference number
Coordinator Uppsala universitet - Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 209 217
Project duration December 2015 - November 2019
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Expected results and effects

The BDAS projects primary aim was to develop a low profile, versatile, cost effective system for assessing bone density measurements for initial diagnosis of osteoporosis. Other important aspects of the project are research exchanges and generation of knowledge. BDAS developed various hardware and software components. The collaboration included research visits from either sides of the academic partners, during the 4 years there were a total of at least 8 research visits from both sides. 2 PhD students where co-supervised in the project. One PhD graduated in November 2019.

Planned approach and implementation

Uppsala University Hospital was the key partner for the pilot clinical trial which continued for 3 years. We were able to include 22 patients in the complete study. MicroCT analysis versus dielectric profile mapping where done using cranial sample to study the relation between one other and to make clinical assessment of the healing progress. Among, 6 follow ups, up to first 4 follow ups were done in the hospital but the researchers needed to visit patients at their homes. The cooperation of the parents and clinicians has benefitted the clinical trials a lot.
