Reference number
Coordinator Göteborgs Universitet - Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper, Avdelningen för biomaterialvetenskap
Funding from Vinnova SEK 21 000 000
Project duration April 2012 - March 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The vision of BIOMATCELL is to become a global leader in the research and development of innovative medical devices based on biomaterials and cell therapy, with a focus on the musculoskeletal system. Based on achivements so far, BIOMATCELL has emerged as a significant national node in a developing cluster of research, innovation and education in the area of biomaterials/stem cells/medical devices, but a remaining challenge is to increase the industrial engagement in the centre.

Results and expected effects

Research excellence in the field has been achieved, as judged by publications, invitations and international visits and collaboration. Technology and method platforms which significantly enhance the R&D competence of the partners and Sweden have been developed, and new ideas and inventions have been transferred from the Centre to Biomatcell AB, which handles IP management and early commercialization. One patent family forms the basis for a new spin-out company, Psilox, AB, founded 2014. New services towards medtech industry have been brought to the market by two of the partners.

Approach and implementation

The research program addresses scientific, clinical and industrial challenges and needs jointly identified by the partners, such as, tissue regeneration around bone anchored implants and diagnosis and treatment of implant associated infections. Use and exploitation of the results takes place via active participation of industry and clinicians in the research projects, leading to increased competence and access to new knowledge, ideas and technologies for the partners.
