Important results from the project
The purpose and objective was to test the hypothesis whether a biochar produced from residual streams from the forest industry meets special properties to function as a growth substrate.
Expected long term effects
Full-grown plants thrive, cuttings take root and seeds germinate in biochar produced from residual streams from the forest industry.
Approach and implementation
We were looking for a bio-based culture medium with the same properties as pumice. High capillary capacity, neutral pH and a texture that allows roots to spread, cuttings to take root and seeds to germinate. Pumice is used as a reference and design and experiments were performed with the properties of pumice, in mind. The bio-based culture medium has the properties we requested, but more tests need to be done to get a clearer picture of how well the properties work.
