BikeSim - Development and demonstration of an anvanced bicycle simulator

Reference number
Coordinator Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut - VTI Göteborg
Funding from Vinnova SEK 998 750
Project duration September 2016 - December 2018
Status Completed
End-of-project report 2016-02499.pdf (pdf, 878 kB)

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to construct a research resource in the form of a cycle simulator for studies of cyclist behavior. The simulator uses an advanced motion platform and different degrees of complexity of simulation can be represented. This enables a higher ecological validity of the simulator than existing simulators.

Expected results and effects

The project delivers a facility that, in addition to VTI´s existing facilities, can be used in research and development projects from industry and academia. Its unique design enables studies that are not possible in existing facilities.

Planned approach and implementation

The project consisted largely of developing and designing the mechanical and software systems required to use the existing motion platform. The project demonstrated that it is possible to balance the cycle in the platform, although this requires training due to the dynamics of the platform. To be able to deliver a functioning simulator, a simpler variant was developed where the balancing is a part of the simulation.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
