Important results from the project
BENEFIT is a European research project in w hich the Sw edish participants (Institute for Medical Technology at Linköping University and ELEKTA) aims to create a new method for characterization, quantification and treatment of oncological and neurological diseases based on multimodal image analysis. Based on research at Linkoping University Elekta has developed a dose planning module based on multi-modal image analysis for the treatment of brain tumors. Results indicate that harmful effects on healty tissue can be significantly reduced.
Expected long term effects
An improved treatment method using irradiation for various types of brain diseases is expected. The multimodal image analysis, co-registration of the various image modalities, as well as inverse planning taking into account the radiation sensitivity of the risk organs should also mean an improved clinical outcome. Preliminary comparisons show that this is indeed the case and it is expected to be confirmed in a future clinical product.
Approach and implementation
The project has been implemented as a European project in which Linkoping University worked in collaboration with the Swedish partner Elekta and with the Dutch party Quantib for brain tumors. This partnership has worked very well and the collaboration with industrial partners have been invaluable to Linkoping University.
