Purpose and goal

Thos project (with acronym ANDURIL) is investigating the possibility of manufacturing non-weldable nickel-based superalloys using electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF), as a complement to conventional methods for critical high-temperature components. The goal is to evaluate processability and cracking, powder behaviour during reuse, transferability between EB-PBF platforms, material behaviour, and to demonstrate the fabrication of a representative component.

Expected effects and result

The project provides documented EB-PBF processing windows for crack-sensitive superalloys, increased understanding of powder behaviour during reuse, a first assessment of transferability between EB-PBF systems and a demonstrator component. The results strengthen the industry´s ability to maintain flexible, resource-efficient manufacturing under disturbed conditions, in line with the goals of the call, and lay the foundation for an industrial validation phase with more partners.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is implemented in three work packages: WP1 Coordination and project management (RISE); WP2 Powder behaviour and EB-PBF process assessment (LiU), including reuse cycles and initial parameter transfer between platforms; and WP3 Heat treatment, mechanical behaviour and demonstrator (RISE), including microstructural characterization and fabrication of a demonstrator component. The work runs from 2026-08-17 to 2028-02-16 with regular follow-up and risk management.
