Coordinator GKN Aerospace Sweden AB - Avd 9005
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 500 000
Project duration November 2019 - December 2022
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The project set-out to answer the following three important questions: 1.Will the casting process give sufficient fatigue properties for the alloy to become an alternative for commercial jet engine components? 2.Can all steps in the heat treatment process be modelled with the view of improving component properties? 3.Will an additive manufacturing route for A205 generate better fatigue properties than the casting process and may this process become commercially attractive?

Expected long term effects

The results from the casting trials were that the alloy casts well and that the foundry has managed to produce a number of samples in several test campaigns with increasing metallurgical quality. Static strength aligned with the promised properties.

Approach and implementation

The project was conducted according the original time plan and technical scope. The spirit in the group was positive with a clear interest shown by everyone to support each other to achieve the best possible result with the available resources and constraints. Innovative methods for material characterization using high resolution tomography and by doing fatigue testing with micro-specimens in the microscope.
