Alloy Design Tool for Additive Manufacturing: Extended Experimental Validation for AlMgSi Alloys

Reference number
Coordinator Innomat AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 80 000
Project duration June 2026 - March 2027
Status Ongoing
Venture Competence centre

Purpose and goal

The project is conducted as an SME-project within the frames of the Competence center CAM2. LPBF printing of Al alloys is often limited by the risk of hot cracking. It is therefore interesting to find modified alloy compositions that do not crack. A simple and rapid and tool for selecting alloy compositions with minimal risk of hot cracking has been developed by Innomat. To validate the results, powders for the adapted compositions have been atomized. In-depth study of laser printed material of the new alloys will be performed.

Expected effects and result

The validity of calculation tools for selecting alloy compositions for AlMgSi alloys for laser additive manufacturing is tested. Improved understanding of the effect of composition. Short publication reporting experiments compared with calculations and predictions using the design tool. Validation of the design tool will be showcased online.

Planned approach and implementation

WP1: Microstructure investigation Printed cubes will be examined in SEM. WP2: Hardness Measurements Performed on cubes that are crack-free, before and after heat treatment. WP3: Heat Treatment Heat treatment parameters are calculated through kinetic modeling. After parameters have been selected, 6 heat treatments are performed.
