Important results from the project

Algal biomass has great potential for use in biomaterials, food, feed, and health applications, as well as for reducing CO₂ emissions. The project develops engineered algal cell factories with increased biomass for an integrated biorefinery. By evaluating biosynthetic pathways and using advanced bioprocessing, proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, and pigments can be extracted, enabling the sustainable production of high-value biobased products.

Expected long term effects

The project will drive sustainable innovation by creating next-generation algal biorefineries that reduce CO₂ emissions while producing high-value biomaterials, food, and biochemicals. Long-term, this will enable efficient biomass utilization, advance bio-based industries, and establish smart production systems that support both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out by forming a 14-partner consortium to prepare the ALGAEDESIGN proposal under Horizon Europe JU-CBE. Activities focused on team building, proposal drafting, and timely submission. The project developed as planned, with all key milestones met on schedule. Collaboration among partners was effective, and no major external disruptions or unexpected events impacted progress.
