Purpose and goal

The AEROBAR project aims to verify and demonstrate TerraBarrier’s innovative coating technology to enhance the strength, durability, and sustainability of aircraft engine components. By combining the TerraBarrier coating with ceramic top layers (TBC), the project seeks to reduce corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement, and cracking in advanced alloys. The goal is to raise the technology from TRL 4 to TRL 5, strengthen Swedish aerospace competitiveness, and support a climate-neutral aviation industry.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to demonstrate that TerraBarrier’s coating, combined with ceramic top layers, improves component lifetime, reduces crack initiation, and increases resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion in aircraft engines. The results will generate new knowledge, strengthen Sweden’s aerospace innovation capacity, and enable future participation in international demonstrators for sustainable and climate-neutral aviation technology.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out in five work packages where TerraBarrier is responsible for coating and GKN for testing and analysis. Representative samples are manufactured, coated, and tested under realistic engine conditions. Data is jointly analysed to verify coating performance and raise the TRL level. The work is led by TerraBarrier with a steering group, clear timeline, and a strong focus on sustainability and gender equality.
