Important results from the project

The overall goal of AdSynBio was to establish new collaborations between Uppsala University and three partners in Singapore; two Universities (NTU & NUS) and one private company (NTi), within a synthetic biology project using photosynthetic cyanobacteria producing hydrocarbons, chemicals and fuels, from CO2. We organised a joint workshop in Singapore, engineered Synechococcus PCC 11901, addressed biosensors, tested membrane-based product separation and are planning a joint EU-application.

Expected long term effects

AdSynBio opened a bridge to highly relevant partners, academic and private, in Singapore which already has an impact on present and future activities and path choices. In the longer term, the knowledge gained and contacts established via this project will have a clear impact on present processes to establish commercial applications of the Green cell factory concept – Chemicals and fuels from CO2 catalysed by engineered photosynthetic cyanobacteria.

Approach and implementation

The implementation was based on digital meetings discussing the three scientific topics; fast-growing cyanobacteria, biosensors and membrane separation of cells and product. In addition, a joint workshop in Singapore brought the partners closer to each other and opened up for further collaborations. Experiments were mainly performed by Uppsala University. Further digital meetings evolved into discussions about joint grant proposals which presently are being planned.
