Call Increased resource efficiency through circular economy (stage 2) - development and innovation projects

Important results from the project

The goal of this project has been to better understand different needs and challenges different actors have, what data needs to be collected, integrated, and shared at different levels and what problems and hindrances need to be raised in order to create and allow for a circular economy base and better battery utilisation. The project has more specifically explored a solution to increase trust and transparency between actors in a circular value chain of batteries, where performance information of individual battery cells can be shared and verified.

Expected long term effects

The project provides a sketch of the future potential circular business ecosystem and present a concept for data collection, processing and distribution for traction batteries. In addition, we simplify understanding about data needs and classify them into three main types: material, product, system. We identify needed actor competences and roles for functioning business ecosystem and present the concept of a data production line as a solution for value creation with data that might otherwise be underutilised and detail simple rules for the same.

Approach and implementation

This project includes both research and innovation efforts. The research team aimed to create a greater understanding of the business ecosystem of traction batteries by gathering insights from actors in the value chain. Context was added with a review of state-of-the-art research and trends in the field. Nortical, on their side, focused on developing a solution for collecting, storing and processing data for use in the business ecosystem with a consideration to potential customer needs.
