Important results from the project
The aim of the project was to gain a deeper understanding of how difficult ocean plastics can be transformed into new products within the interior and building industry. This was achieved by producing prototypes, analysing materials, analysing the market and means of scaling up production. The aim was achieved through the analysis of manufactured prototypes that prove suitable within the field. The marketing analysis proved interest for the products and business agreements have been signed.
Expected long term effects
The results from the prototype manufacturing show good opportunities to use these plastics, primarily in the interior design industry. The analysis of the materials and prototypes show that the fire requirements for e.g. facade cladding for high-rise buildings can be difficult to achieve without the addition of flame retardants, which is contrary to our circular vision for the products. Scaling up the production of interior design products and sheets is a way of raising awareness of the problem of plastics in the ocean and creating sustainable alternatives to virgin products.
Approach and implementation
The production of prototypes was done in collaboration with Sotenäs municipality´s Test Bed for Ocean Waste where a workspace and some equipment was available. The designs, manufacturing, and processing were executed in an iterative process. Prototypes were sent to RISE for analysis of, among other things, fire, chemicals and mechanical properties to assess the appropriate area of use. The branding work was carried out in collaboration with a consultant, and the market research and survey of upscaling was carried out through interviews and study visits.
