Food is one of the most important things in our lives. At the same time, today's food system is vulnerable and faces a number of challenges that hinder innovation, competitiveness and sustainability. To meet them, Vinnova is now initiating a five-year program to build innovation platforms with ambitious objective for an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable food system.

Food production and consumption account for 25 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, today's eating habits are one of the biggest risk factors for ill health and early death in Sweden. At the same time, the power of renewal in the food sector is low.

A new recipe for the food system is a long-term effort to meet the very system and policy challenges that hinder innovation, competitiveness and transformation in the field. The effort will contribute to building innovation platforms where actors are allowed to experiment and explore new methods and ways of working. The platforms must be formed around ambitious conversion goals, so-called missions, which can contribute to an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable food system.
