The sustainable and inclusive societies of the future in the north
The sustainable and inclusive societies of the future in the north
Published: 1 June 2022
New districts entirely in recycled materials, a cultural currency, campus life on the closed E4 and an ice rink in Boden Fortress - that and much more are proposed by eleven multidisciplinary teams participating in the project Visions in the north to create attractive and sustainable living environments in six municipalities in Norrbotten and Västerbotten. Together with architects, artists, writers, researchers and designers, six municipalities in Norrbotten and Västerbotten have developed visions for the societies of the future.

I Norrbotten and Västerbotten are currently making one of the largest investments ever in green industry, technology and infrastructure. The investment places great eligibility requirements on new housing, attractive living environments and long-term sustainability. How do you make sure that existing residents want to stay and that new ones move in?
The purpose of the project Visions in the north, initiated by the Council for Sustainable Cities and which, among others, Vinnova is behind, is to bring together several creative professional groups to look at how we can create beautiful, inclusive and sustainable societies. Idea sketches have been presented for Kiruna, Gällivare, Boden, Luleå, Skellefteå and Umeå.
During the spring, the team visited the municipalities, talked to residents, received input from association life and investigated the unique values of different places. Among the results are proposals for completely new buildings based on the children's needs, new districts created from recycled materials, investments in local culture and new recreational areas that strengthen the local identity.
- In northern Sweden, major investments and societal transformations are currently taking place when Swedish industry takes a leading role in the transition to a fossil-free world. Cities and communities where establishments take place need to change in order to be able to receive a growing population and meet the need for skills. Then new thinking is needed. What is required for housing, infrastructure and services to meet the needs? And how do we make it happen in a sustainable, beautiful and inclusive way that attracts new residents to not only make a quick visit but also to stay and become part of the local community? says Maria Johansson, who works with sustainable built environments at Vinnova.
Behind the project Visions in the north are, among others, the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, ArkDes, Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency, and Formas, through the Council for Sustainable Cities, together with the municipalities of Kiruna, Gällivare, Boden, Luleå, Skellefteå and Umeå. The idea sketch work has been carried out within the framework of a call for proposals financed by Formas and Vinnova, where each team has been awarded a funding of SEK 300,000.
