Towards a sustainable development in the mining and metal extraction industry

In this offer, we finance short-term pre-studies, full-scale innovation projects or pilot projects that meet the societal challenges defined in the STRIM agenda for sustainable mining and metal extraction.

What can you apply for?

In the offer we fund shorter pre-studies, full-scale innovation projects or pilot projects in mining and metal extraction.

 

Who can apply?

Consortia of companies, universities and colleges, research institutes and other relevant actors with at least two industrial partners / companies and one research actor. Pre-studies can be applied for by a single party if the applicant can demonstrate industrial relevance in the form of a letter of intent from at least one company.

How much can you apply for?

The budget for the offer is SEK 20 million. For pre-studies, a maximum of SEK 500,000 can be applied for and for a full-scale innovation project a maximum of SEK 10 million. For full-scale projects and pilot projects, the total funding is max. 50 percent and for pre-studies max. 75 percent.

    • Resource characterisation
    • Mining
    • Mineral processing
    • Recycling and metallurgy
    • Environmental performance
    • Attractive workplaces
    • Corporate social responsibility and societal relations
    • Gender and diversity in mining

    Pre-studies can be up to 6 months, innovation projects up to 36 months and pilot projects up to 18 months.

    What is STRIM?

    The Strategic Innovation Programme for the Swedish Mining and Metal Producing Industry (STRIM) is part of Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Research Council Formas joint program for strategic innovation areas.

    STRIM aims to strengthen the sector’s competitiveness and contribute to a sustainable development within the mining and metal producing industry in following ways:

    • world-leading and efficient research, development, innovation and education;
    • a sustainable and secure raw materials supply that utilizes the country’s geological potential in a sustainable way;
    • a well-developed ability to act on the international market within profitable niches, with increased added value from the products;
    • the promotion of a set of rules and regulations compatible with an expanding industry that does not negatively impact international competitiveness while also achieving resource efficiency;
    • strengthen Sweden’s mining regions to make them innovative and attractive places for investments and living. Collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can play an important role in this
    • improve the mining sector’s image by accepting social and environmental responsibility and offering attractive workplaces in which men and women work together to develop sustainable production processes.

    Formal requirements for proposal

    Only proposals that meet the following formal requirements will be assessed:

    • The project partners must be legal entities.
    • The project cannot have started prior to the submission of the proposal.
    • For pre-studies, applicants must be able to demonstrate industrial relevance in the form of a letter of intent from at least one company.
    • For full-scale innovation projects and pilot projects, a verified commitment for all industrial partners/companies must be attached.
    • For full-scale innovation projects and pilot projects, the consortium must consist of at least two industrial partners / companies and one research actor.
    • For full-scale innovation projects and pilot projects, a maximum of 50 percent of the project's eligible costs can be funded.
    • For preliminary studies, a maximum of 75 per cent of the project's eligible costs can be funded.
    • Proposal must contain everything that is requested in paragraph 9 of the call text and templates must be used where provided.
    • The maximum project time is 6 months for pre-studies, 36 months for full-scale innovation projects and 18 months for pilot projects.
    • ·The project must address at least one of the areas in the STRIM agenda.

    How to apply

    To apply for funding, you need to fill out an application form in our portal, Vinnova's eServices Portal. The form contains questions about the project, project partners and budget.

    Allow enough time to complete the application

    Keep in mind that it takes time to make a proposal. Filling in all the templates can take several days, because they are based on analyzes you are going to do. Therefore, start the proposal well in advance. You can start filling in data, save and continue at a later time. When the proposal is complete, you mark it as ready. You can at any time unlock proposal and make changes right up until the call for proposals closes or has readings.

    What happens after the call has closed?

    Once your application has been registered, we'll send a confirmation email to the person responsible for the user account, as well as to the project manager and the company signer. Please note that this may take a few hours after the call has closed.

    After the closing date, you can't register any new information. You may only add information to your application if we ask for it.

    Who can read your application?

    Applications submitted to us become official documents. However, we don't disclose information about business operations, inventions or research results if it can be assumed that someone will suffer economic damage if we do.

    This means that we must disclose the documents if someone requests them. However, we can black out information if we believe it could cause economic harm if disclosed.
