Designed Materials

Designed Materials relates to materials/materials systems whose structure (on a macro, micro or sub-micro/nano level) can be deliberately manipulated so as to affect the material’s properties in a controlled fashion and achieve a specific functionality in product manufacture. Designed Materials has no direct connection with any specific industrial sector.

During 2006-2009, VINNOVA carried out a total of 11 assessments in two continuous, open calls for proposals.

One of these, Designed Materials – Capability Testing and Concept Verification, resulted in support for projects aiming to provide supporting data in assessing:

  • whether research results can produce commercially viable material concepts and if so,
  • how commercialisation can best happen.

The other, Designed Materials – Industrialisation, resulted in support for projects aiming to:

  • transfer verified material concepts to industrially viable solutions
  • build up value chains and networks for development, manufacture, use and marketing of industrialised material concepts.

No further calls for proposals have been decided upon.

Under the auspices of Designed Materials, VINNOVA also participates in MNT ERA-NET, a cooperation between EU research financiers.
