Sweden has a strong R&D tradition in the field of IT/telecommunication systems, funded by both the private and public sectors, which has led to major international successes for Swedish industry. The aim of the research in the years ahead will be to meet the challenges posed by a process of structural transformation – a process that will create an infrastructure for a future mobile e-society that will support a range of services and mobility across different access networks in order to provide real broadband for everyone, everywhere. In the Swedish National Broadband Test Bed project, VINNOVA has set up an “experimental network” in which researchers at universities can meet and co-operate with representatives of small and large companies.

In this field, VINNOVA called for applications for funds from the programme Communication Networks of the Future in 2003.
