Berzelii Centres should focus on excellent basic research. Berzelii Centres must also have a clear ambition in the long term to collaborate actively with stakeholders from the private and public centres and to put research results to concrete use in the form of commercial applications. Support will be provided for up to 10 years.
A call was issued under the programme in 2005 with 1 December as the final application date.
It is the intention of the Swedish Research Council and VINNOVA to establish a total of no more than four Berzelii Centres. They will be gradually developed to a maximum level of totally SEK 10 million in grants per year. In addition to this, there will be co-funding from universities and colleges and from stakeholders in the private and public sectors. It is estimated that the total turnover of a centre over a period of 10 years will be approximately SEK 170 million, with the Swedish Research Council and VINNOVA providing a maximum of SEK 50 million each.
The Berzelii Centres are one of the several forms of support launched by the Swedish Research Council, VINNOVA, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (Formas) and the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS).
Erik Litborn is responsible for the programme at VINNOVA.
